About:Long
The top paragraph may be used independently as it is only 150 words, and the two combined are under 300 words. FYI
Scale is a monthly semi-automated "lofi" online (PDF) and print journal with a focus on remediation, new media, aesthetics and computation. The concept "lofi" expresses the intention to minimize procedural noise in order to hot-wire dialogues about theory, criticism and practice by employing a transparent submission cycle. The journal is conscious of the empowerment from its extended social network - the fiber that weaves together Scale's community - as it reduces the barriers that normally repress innovation and stifle synthesis. Scale's submissions come from a wide range of locations and disciplines. Scale's publishing ethos also includes a conceptual focus on the "local" social network moving outward. http://scale.ucsd.edu/
Scale seeks to create a context, a dialogic space that provides a service aiding in the transmission, reception, and discussion of ideas. A great deal of relevant, interesting, and insightful ideas exist but are often prevented from reaching a wider range of constituents (from many disciplines) on account of the cumbersome networks of publication and other barriers inhibiting person-to-person intellectual exchange. As a result, Scale plays a significant role in streamlining the journal process by adapting successful strategies from older publishing models, while assimilating new ones from the open source software world. This procedural hybridity is combined with limited curatorial direction from a monthly "guest editor," and then distilled into the 'final' Scale. Following publication, all submissions remain archived online thereby retaining the transparent processes involved. Concomittantly, the editor's task is more curatorial in the selection of submissions rather than deep editing of content. The expanded process of both accepting submissions and the final versioning of an edition month-to-month allows the journal to have a full life--not just a mythic suddenly-in-your-hands existence. Scale encourages participation and improvisation from all participants; the media consumer is the media producer.
